The Henry Le Boeuf Hall once again hosts the best in Sufi music from a number of different countries. The common denominator of these diverse traditions is that they see music as a means whereby the believer can become one with the divine.
Ahmet Özhan from Turkey is a devotee of the Mevlevi order, the branch of Sufism that follows the teachings of the poet and theologian Mevlana (better known in the West as Rumi). Asif Ali Khan from Pakistan is a leading exponent of Qawwali, the Sufi music of South Asia. He was a protégé of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who introduced the genre to Western audiences. The repertoire of the Orchestre Radwân de Tlemcen from Algeria is based on mystical texts by Sufi poets from the city of Tlemcen, some of which date back to the twelfth century and are among the most important mystical poetry of the Maghreb.
