Speak Right Now: commuters in Antwerp Central stop for a minute to think and act for human rights thanks to Fedactio Antwerp

To celebrate the 70th birthday of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Fedactio launched its project Speak Right Now, with events in defense of human rights across the whole of Belgium. Below, you may find a report of one of the events in Antwerp.

On Friday 7 December Fedactio Antwerp put up a stand in Antwerp Central to promote human rights in the context of the project Speak Right Now. Hasty travelers were informed through the numerous flyers at their disposal. Those with more time were invited to participate in the Amnesty International writing session. To reward their efforts, volunteers of Fedactio Antwerp offered them a piece of cake and cup of coffee. Together, almost 150 letters were written.
Behind the writing tables, various testimonials, both of victims and of professionals, were projected on screen. Amongst others, a Syrian refugee was interviewed as well as Kati Verstrepen, president of the Ligue for Human Rights, Ernest Sagaga of the International Federation of Journalists, children’s rights’ commissioner Bruno Vanobbergen and Talha Yildiz of the platform Humanitarian Help and Solidarity. The initiative was lauded by the commuters and received many positive comments.

The whole Care Company of Antwerp deserves a treat

Sunday 21 October, member association Inspiration participated in the first round of a special contest organized by Care Company Antwerp. In total, the participants are to showcase their culinary skills in three rounds, of which the first round took place the 21st.

For the first round, participants were challenged by the theme ‘Healthy Treats’. The recipes were judged by presentation, taste, originality and difficulty. Recipes with the highest score will be prepared during the Week of Chocolate in March 2019. Those who have yet to taste the delicacies are thus kindly directed to this particular event.

Member association Inspiration receives subsidies for four projects in 2018-2019

The budget for Antwerp's citizens was finalized on October 21, rewarding our member association, Inspiration, for its hard work. Among the 78 projects the city chose to invest in, there were four projects by Inspiration which received enough votes to receive subsidies in 2018-2019.

The decision of which projects to support was made by over 700 of Antwerp's citizens that gathered on Sunday. In total 153 projects were sent in and 78 projects were rewarded, promoting different goals (more social contact, study guidance, more green in the streets, intercultural projects ...). Together, they will receive over 1 million euros in subsidies. Inspiration has the following four projects in the pipeline:
  1. A cultural evening (one of the eight winning 'intercultural projects'): an evening at people's homes to get to know each other;
  2. A cooking course (one of the seven winning projects 'trainings and education'): three different cultures at the same table;
  3. Stories from around the world (intercultural projects): our values and norms and where they originated;
  4. Living together, educating together (intercultural projects); an education is given by more than one person and not only done at home.
Inspiration wishes to thank everyone for their support and trust. The organisation will do its utmost best to bring these projects to a good conclusion.

Member association For Youth is working towards a youth centre for all youngsters in Antwerp

Member association For Youth is doing well: it has already started up its new intergenerational project in Brussels and Ghent and it received a youth centre in Antwerp to do with as they please, so they drew up a plan to renovate and redecorate the building.

The first steps were taken on Saturday 13 October, when the old chairs, tables and cupboards were thrown out and the old kitchen was removed. In the months of October - November a team of voluntary electricians will start working. After that, another team of volunteers is ready to brighten the rooms with a new layer of paint.

For Youth is hoping to open the youth centre as soon as possible, for all youngsters of Antwerp.
