Socially committed students from the last two years of secondary education found their way once more to the Social Science Olympiads, organised by the Flemish Olympiad Association and Francolympiades, its French-speaking equivalent. The finals of Olysso (Social Science Olympiad for French-speakers) and SOWO (Social Science Olympiad for Dutch-speakers) took place on May 5 and 25 respectively.
On those dates, students were asked to defend their dissertations in front of a professional jury. A selection was made beforehand, sorting the students into different categories according to their dissertation’s topic: Health, Education, Social Cohesion, Economy, Media and Human Rights. Of each category, experts on that particular field were invited to judge the contestants and during lunch break, a winner was chosen in each category.
In the afternoon, those winners competed for the ultimate prize: a monetary sum of 250 euros and the chance to do a ‘social internship’ in a third world country. Of all competitors, Freya Caris (Dutch) and Jamila Barry (French) were the most convincing.
