The finale of the Pangea Mathquiz 2018: these are the winners!

160 finalisten vanover het hele land maten zich met elkaar tijdens de Pangea-wiskundequiz.
Fully concentrated
The Flemish Olympiad Association launched the 11th edition of Pangea-Mathquiz’s finale on 10 Mars 2018. The Pangea-mathquiz is a contest for primary school students in second and third grade and for secondary school students in the first and second grade. The contest is also organized in over 15 other European countries, . In Belgium, the contest counted 14.000 participants, of which only 160 Dutch-speakers got to the finals. These laureates had the opportunity to prove their mathematical talent at the ODISEE campus in Brussels.  
Following the contest, the finalists were given a little time to rest, as well as a sandwich and drinks. Meanwhile, the people in charge of the quiz’s correction got down to their work, which was worth the effort: just an hour later, the show-host Harun Kaya and the president of the VOV Esra Calik started awarding the prizes. The first-prize winner received a 100€ gift voucher and for the rest of the winners there were board games based on science and technology. Below you can find a list with all the winners. VOV wishes them the best with their well-deserved prizes.

Meridiaan organizes a tour at the Comic Book Museum in Brussels for all students of the drawing contest

Saturday 20 January was a particularly colorful day for Meridiaan’s students and for Ghent’s participants of the drawing contest organized by Francolympiades and VOV. All visited the Comic Book Museum in Brussels, an event that was organised for free to reward all students for their hard work.

The trip started in Ghent, where the students took the train heading to Brussels. For some of them it was the first time on a train, so the trip itself was already an adventure. Once the students arrived at their destination, they were tour-guided through the collection. Afterwards, they could explore the museum freely.


Back in the train to Ghent, the students had animated conversations about their shared experience. The visit might just serve as inspiration for the next drawing contest. In any case, it has awakened creativity and stimulated their interest in reading.

Meridiaan exhibits the drawings resulting from the “art of living together”-contest at de Krook library in Ghent

Meridiaan displayed all the winning drawings from its drawing contest “Kunst van het samenleven” (the art of living together) at Ghent’s new library, which opened its doors for the first time on 8 January. The drawing contest was centered around the topic “the world of tomorrow”, a theme seamlessly matching the library’s own collection about the new year.

The exhibition attracted a wide audience, something for which Meridiaan’s responsible was very thankful: “With this project we ensure that the drawings’ messages reach as many people as possible. The messages are nature-related and advocate global peace and technological advancements being used for the better, all topics might attract people’s attention”.


The exhibition will be displayed until 29 January and is definitely worth visiting. Make sure you don’t forget to admire De Krook, an impressive building in itself.

The laureates of the Flemish Social Sciences Contest were announced

1249 pupils in Flanders participated in the second edition of the Social Science Contest, an initiative of the Flemish Olympiad Association. Eveline Pylyser (Maerlant Atheneum Blankenberge), Tatjana De Bruyn and Laura Pauwels (Sint-Jozefscollege Aarschot) and the team of Fatima Karem and Esma Ucan (Lucernacollege Antwerpen) took home the first price of the contest. 

The final of the Social Science Contest took place at the campus of the College University of Brussels in the city centre of Brussels. President of the Flemish Parliament Jan Peumans and Flemish Minister of Education Pascal Smet were the guest of honor of the price ceremony. During his speech Peumans announced that the contest raises awareness of social problems and he also invited the winners to visit the Flemish Parliament. Minister of Education praised the organization and stressed on the fact that the contest seeks to discover the hidden talents of our youngsters and puts them in the spotlights.
The variety of the projects was catching the eye of the audience: projects about social media, poverty, genderdiversity, the Arabic revolution, discrimination in Europe and drug problems. Therefore it was a challenge for the jury of 16 professors and 13 politiciens like senator Bert Anciaux, Flemish Deputy Vera Celis, Federal Deputy and Professor Eva Brems, Prof. Dr. Johan Leman (KULeuven), Prof. Dr. Ides Nicaise (KULeuven) en Prof. Dr. Johan Ackaert (UHasselt) to evaluate the research projects. After a first selection, the 30 finalists competed for the first place. They presented and defended their project orally in the classrooms of the College University of Brussels.
Winners of the contest Fatima Karem and Esma Ucan were handed out a price of 500 euro for their research on the partner choice by youngsters of ethnic minorities in Europe. Jobstop also offered them to participate in a social internship program in Ghana. Eveline Pylyser with her paper about anorexia and Tatjana De Bruyn and Laura Pauwels with their research on suicide in Belgium also won 500 euro. The other finalists were also praised for their work. Professor Johan Leman had the honor to hand out the prices and he said that the quality of the projects is equal to first bachelor degree. “These pupils are ready for higher education”, Leman added.

A social internship in Kyrgyzstan for SOWO laureate Elke Peeraer

This year SOWO rewarded its laureate with a social internship, this time as a volunteer in Kyrgyzstan. Out of the 360 third grade students who participated in the Social Science Olympiad, Elke Peeraer was first in the category Health. Then, she was elected as winner of all categories, including Health, Citizenship, Economics, Education and Europe.




Volunteering
The winner of SOWO, Elke Peeraer was rewarded with a social internship to Kyrgyzstan. The finalist was offered not only to travel, but an opportunity to learn more about the needs of the local people and their daily lives. As a volunteer she helped at a school, a health center, and an orphanage.

Social internship
The Flemish Olympiad Association (VOV), the organizer of the event, wants to stress the importance of social values through this internship. They also hope to encourage social responsibility among young people and increased participation in volunteering.
The VOV also has social internships organized in Cape Town (South Africa) and Gaziantep (Turkey).

Drawing Competition 'The elderly tell, the young dream'


The drawings of the 50 finalists of the drawing competition, organized by the Flemish Olympiad Association (VOV) in partnership with the French-speaking Olympiad Association (Francolympiades), under the theme 'The elderly tell, the young dream' will be showcased in a special exhibition area of the Federation of Active Associations (Fedactio) in Brussels.

Exhibition of 2/3 to 31/3 - Paleizenstraat 27, Brussels, + 32 71 31 12 12 - Monday to Friday from 13 to 17 pm on Saturdays and Sundays and only open by appointment.

Theme "Older people tell, youngsters dream"
Today's youth and the elderly also suffer from prejudice and often base their perception on prejudices that are not consistent with reality. With this in mind, the theme "The elderly tell, the young dream" was selected for the fourth edition of the drawing contest. Children and seniors  were encouraged to meet, get to know each other better, and understand each other. Afterwards, the young people could create their drawings about their encounter and exchange with the seniors.

50 finalists
This year , over 1,000 children from the second and third grade primary school participated in the fourth edition of the drawing competition "Art of Living Together".  Children from across Belgium sent their drawings on intergenerational dialogue. After a long selection process in each province, 50 finalists were finally selected.

At the national finals, the three winners were determined by an independent jury:

The winner of the second prize was Maysa Chairi
The winner of the third prize was Nele Van Baelen

Sowo finalists head to Kirgizstan for a social internship

The winners of the Social Sciences Olympiad, an initiative by the Flemish Olympiad Association, left for Kirgizstan this Monday.
The winners of the Social Sciences Olympiad are going to Kirgizstan for a social internship. It is not a journey, but an internship that will take you out of your comfort zone and make you stand on your own feet by learning about other cultures and customs. The winners of the first prize, Vincent Nagels, Robin Verbruggen and Merve Imemek from the Katholiek Scholencentrum JOMA in Antwerp have departed to Kirgizstan, this Monday. The social internship will take place in Kirgizstan. During their internship the finalists will be doing voluntary work in different institutions such as schools, hospitals,  aid agencies and others.

By this social internship, the Olympiad Association aims to underline the importance of social values. Moreover, the association wants to promote voluntary work to improve the youngsters’ sense of responsibility. The jury committee decided on Kirgizstan for this year’s internship. Finalists from previous editions of the Olympiads have been to Gaziantep in Turkey and to Cape town in South-Africa.

The Flemish Parliament opened its doors for the finale of the SocialSciences Olympiad

The Flemish Parliament welcomed the finalists of the Social Sciences Olympiad together with their numerous supporters. The committee rooms of the parliament were used by the teenagers to present their research on a particular issue regarding the social sciences. The students gave the jury members Prof. Dr. Johan Leman, Prof. Dr. Ides Nicaise, Prof. Dr. Dimitri Mortelmans, journalist Annelien de Greef, MPs Elke Roex, Helga De Valk, Siegfried Bracke, Nahima Lanjri and Fouad Gandoul a hard time.
The Social Sciences Olympiad is an initiative of the Flemish Olympiad Association (VOV). This unique interschool competition in Flanders challenges students aged 17-18 to find a solution to social problems. The students were given a year to prepare their research and finally they were given the opportunity to present their work at Flemish Parliament.

Students raised the issues of bullying, rights for donor children, gender representation in politics, the future of trade unions and other interesting themes. After the preselection the contestants were able to distress during the guided tour in the parliament. More than 100 attendees joined the tour.

The big moment, finally, came. President of the Flemish Parliament Jan Peumans opened the award ceremony by a welcome speech. President of CD&V Wouter Beke and rector of KULeuven Rik Torfs were also present at the ceremony. Eventually, Vincent Nagels, Robin Verbruggen and Merve Imemek of Katholiek Scholencentrum JOMA in Antwerp came in first. They are leaving to Kirgizstan this summer for a social internship where they will be doing voluntary work. After the prize ceremony the participants enjoyed a snack and a drink in the Hall of Pillars.

The winner of our second Drawing Contest is Marc Rattat

The second edition of our drawing contest, 'Art of Living Together' was announced to all primary schools of the country a few months ago. We asked year 5 and year 6 students to draw 'citizenship' as they see it.

This contest is organised by Francolympiads in partnership with VOV. It’s a great occasion to work together, both French-speaking and Dutch-speaking people, as drawings have no specific language; they convey universal messages.

First, the contest has been undertaken on a regional contest, in 5 regions, and then on a national level. The jury members were all artists and painters, and some of them were MP’s related to the culture and art fields.

Then, 10 laureates from each region had their drawings displayed in the exhibition at the Ecole des Etoiles, also a member association of Fedactio.

The first five laureates were Marc Rattat, Maxime Van Assell, Camille Combel and Aisling Miller. However, the jury members agreed that all participants won this contest by presenting creative drawings, therefore each student received a present. The first laureates received respectively a family-trip, a multimedia gift-card of a value of 80€ and family tickets for a ride park.

Our member associations plan to repeat this successful contest every year with a variety of themes.
